| Spiritus Sanctus vivificans vita, movens omnia, et radix est in omni creatura, ac omnia de immunditia abluit, tergens crimina, ac ungit vulnera, et sic est fulgens ac laudabilis vita, suscitans et resuscitans omnia. |
The Holy Ghost is a life-giving Life, moving all things, the Root of every creature. He cleanses every sin, rubbing out offenses and anointing wounds. Therefore, He is a shining and praiseworthy Life, elevating and raising up all again. |
| 1. O ignee Spiritus, laus tibi sit, qui in timpanis et citharis operaris. |
1. O fiery Spirit, praise be to Thee, who workest upon the timbrel and harp. |
| 2. Mentes hominum de te flagrant et tabernacula animarum eorum vires ipsarum continent. |
2. By Thee the minds of men are kindled and the virtues surround the tabernacle of their souls. |
| 3. Unde voluntas ascendit et gustum anime tribuit, et eius lucerna est desiderium. |
3. From this the will ascends, with ardent desire as its guide, and allows the soul a foretaste. |
| 4. Intellectus te in dulcissimo sono advocat ac edificia tibi cum racionalitate parat, que in aureis operibus sudat. |
4. The intellect calls upon Thee with sweetest sound, and prepares for Thee a dwelling-place, together with reason, which labors in these golden works. |
| 5. Tu autem semper gladium habes illud abscidere quod noxiale pomum per nigerrimum homicidium profert, |
5. But Thou hast ever the sword to cut away that which the poison tree brings forth by blackest murder, |
| 6. Quando nebula voluntatem et desideria tegit, in quibus anima volat et undique circuit. |
6. when the cloud covers the will and the desire, amongst which the soul flies and from which it circles. |
| 7. Sed mens est ligatura voluntatis et desiderii. |
7. But the mind is the twisting together of will and desire. |
| 8. Cum vero animus se ita erigit, quod requirit pupillam mali videre et maxillam nequicie, tu eum citius in igne comburis cum volueris. |
8. For when the spirit raises itself up to seek the eye of evil and the jaw of iniquity, Thou quickly consumest it in the fire, when Thou willest. |
| 9. Sed et cum racionalitas se per mala opera ad prona declinat, tu eam, cum vis, stringis et constringis et reducis per infusionem experimentorum. |
9. But when reason falls flat by wicked deeds, Thou bindest, constrainest, and leadest it back, when Thou wishest, by a pouring forth of trials. |
| 10. Quando autem malum ad te gladium suum educit, tu illud in cor illius refringis sicut in primo perdito angelo fecisti, ubi turrim superbie illius in infernum deiecisti. |
10. When evil draws its sword against Thee, Thou breakest it to its very heart, as Thou didst to the first fallen angel, whose tower of pride Thou hast cast into the fire. |
| 11. Et ibi aliam turrim in publicanis et peccatoribus elevasti, qui tibi peccata sua cum operibus suis confitentur. |
11. Instead, Thou hast raised up another tower, amongst the publicans and sinners, who confess their sins to Thee by their deeds. |
| 12. Unde omnes creature que de te vivunt, te laudant, quia tu preciosissimum ungentum es fractis et fetidis vulneribus, ubit illa in preciossimas gemmas convertis. |
12. Thus, let every creature, which takes its life from Thee, offer Thee praise, for Thou art that most precious ointment for broken and stinking wounds, which Thou turnest into most precious gems. |
| 13. Nunc dignare nos omnes ad te colligere et ad recta itinera dirigere. Amen. |
13. Deign now to bind us all to Thee and guide us in the right path. Amen. |
