A Note from Fr. Ringley/MENSAJE DEL PADRE RINGLEY

As we begin to move more toward “normal”, I have tried to put together a “State of the Parish” report to update you on where we stand. In the first place, I am happy to report that more people are feeling comfortable about returning to Mass. We are averaging close to 400 people each weekend. This is a hopeful sign. Furthermore, our RCIA program is up and running again. We currently have between 15 and 20 students who are attending class with their parents and learning about the Catholic Faith together. This too, is a hopeful sign.

Parking Lot. With a new survey of our entire property, architectural services to plan the new layout, crack filling, sealcoating, and striping this project cost about $20,000. This was a big undertaking which began more than a year ago and which took much time and effort to complete. I am very happy that the job is done, and I hope it is facilitating the parking situation!

Church capacity update. I am only going to explain the new regulations as they apply to our church building. The number of people we can have in our church has increased from 100 to 200. However, the same social distancing must be maintained. With that, our church can still only hold 100 individuals. However, a family unit that can all sit in one pew will allow the number of people to go over 100. For example, if 95 individuals are present in addition to 5 families of 5 each seated as families in 5 pews, we can accommodate all those 120 people at the same Mass. At the moment, since we have added the 11:15 Latin Mass, we will not benefit much from the increase. However, we hope that as more people feel comfortable returning to Mass that we will be able to accommodate more people at each Mass.

Church roof. This project includes routine maintenance to the slate, the repair of some damaged wood, and a few other minor issues. The routine maintenance of the roof will help to forestall major (very costly) issues which could easily arise without it (ca. $16,000).

New Development with the Steeple. You may recall that the steeple was one of the three projects for which our Capital Campaign share was to have been directed (see report on the We Stand With Christ Campaign below). Today (10/5/20) I discovered that there has been some serious damage to one of the large windows in the steeple which must be addressed immediately. I hope that we can attribute the damage to the large storm back in August and get some help from the insurance company. We are trying to find the parishioner who knows how to fix the clock and there is still water damage to the steeple which needs to be addressed.

Church front doors and school doors. These two projects have been very difficult to complete as we have had trouble finding the right contractor, and because the door supply chain was seriously interrupted by the Covid mess. The plan is to replace the two center doors of the church with wooden ones which will look more like the original doors (and will actually work!). We don’t have a working price on this at the moment. There are a number of both interior and exterior doors in the school and gym which need to be replaced. These will cost approximately $20,000 and should be installed in October.

We Stand With Christ update. You will recall that during my first year here we opened the Diocesan Capital Campaign called we Stand with Christ. We received pledges of about $500,000, half of which was to come back to the parish. Unfortunately, many of those pledges are not being fulfilled and we are at best $70,000 from seeing anything come back to us. I don’t really expect to see any money coming our way. Nevertheless, the work we planned to do with that money still has to be done, i.e. parking lot, school/gym roof, and steeple. The parking lot and gym roof with exhaust fans are done. The church steeple is pending. I don’t have a price tag on it yet as things continue to develop (see above).

Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). This annual diocesan fund raiser (formerly known as the Annual Bishop’s Appeal) is distinct from the one-time Capital Campaign (see above). As of 9/22/20 our parish had reached 57% of our $100,000 goal. I will have to address this with the parish in the near future, but the timing is not good given the fact that we are just now getting people back to church.

Endowment Fund update. We sold the furniture store across the street about a year and a half ago and put the 2 million dollars in an endowment fund. This money is not available to us for use for repairs, maintenance, etc. It is to be left alone to produce income for the parish. As the market fluctuates so does our income. Roughly two thirds of the dividends are returned to the investment capital while about one third is “raked off” on a monthly basis. Our portfolio is obviously rather conservative. Given the fluctuating market conditions over the last year, our monthly income has varied from $1,000 to $4,000 per month. At the moment, this does not approximate the $8,500 we received in rent each month from the furniture store. But, in coronavirus hindsight, we would certainly not want to be the owners of that property today.

School Rent. Regina Pacis Academy currently rents our school building at a rate of $6,000 per month. The parish pays the utilities (ca.$1,700 per month) and maintains the building. Essentially, we receive approximately $4,000 per month in rent from the school.

Devine Brothers Rent. The Devine Brothers Company (concrete and heating oil) down the street behind us rents 11 parking spaces from Monday through Friday at approximately $500 per month.

Our Lady of Norwalk. Some have asked whether Our Lady of Norwalk will be restored to her place above the right side altar. In time she will. I thought it would be nice to showcase some of our other Ladies, as different apparitions of Our Lady have special significance for different groups of people in our parish. Our Lady of Good Health (Veilankanni) was highlighted in her month of September (9/8), and Our Lady of the Rosary is currently being highlighted in her month of October (10/7). There will be a short explanation of each apparition on display on the altar below.

The weekly Offertory Collection is our primary source of income. We are grateful to all who have continued to give on a regular basis through these challenging times. Our regular weekly collection is presently at about one-half to two-thirds of what it was before Covid-19. All told, because our personnel expenses are down, we continue to break even each month. Online giving is our most stable source of offertory. Please consider that as an option.

Deo gratias.

Deo gratias.
