Advent Lessons & Carols

Please join us for a ceremony of Advent Lessons & Carols on Friday, December 12th, at 7:00 p.m. Anthems, chants, and carols of the season will be interspersed with nine readings from Holy Scripture prophesying the birth of Our Lord. The St. Mary’s Choir (11:30 a.m. Sunday Mass), the Coro Hispano de Santa María (1:15 p.m. Mass), St. Mary’s Children’s Schola, and the Anchor Academy Schola Cantorum will sing; Isabelle Demers (Trinity Church, Wall Street) is the guest organist. The St. Mary’s Children’s Schola and the Anchor Academy Schola Cantorum combine to make their respective debuts this Sunday by singing for the 11:30 Ordinary Form Mass. These young choristers have been rehearsing for several months, learning the basics of singing and reading Gregorian chant, the foundation of all sacred music. Henceforth they will sing approximately once a month, joining the professional Schola Cantorum at the 9:30 Extraordinary Form Mass. The scholae will sing for Advent Lessons & Carols on December 12th, and next sing for Mass on January 11th, the Feast of the Holy Family. St. Cecilia’s Day Vespers, 21 November 2008

Please plan to join us on Friday, 21 November at 7:00 p.m. for a solemn Vespers to mark the vigil of the feast of St. Cecilia, the patroness of music and musicians. The professional St. Mary’s Schola Cantorum (9:30 Sunday Extraordinary Form) will join with the volunteer St. Mary’s Choir (11:30 Sunday Ordinary Form) to sing First Vespers of St. Cecilia’s Day, including the Magnificat Secundi Toni of Tomás Luis de Victoria. Immediately following, the Schola Cantorum will sing a short concert of works by Josquin, Hassler, Crecquillon, and Byrd. A reception will follow. Please plan to join us for this festive occasion as we officially inaugurate the St. Cecilia Society, dedicated to the promotion of sacred music here at St. Mary’s for the greater glory of God and the aedification of the faithful.
