Chant Camp 2011

CHANT CAMP!
Monday, August 1st – Friday, August 5th
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day

David J. Hughes
Organist & Choirmaster, St. Mary’s, Norwalk
instructor

St. Mary’s, Norwalk is pleased to offer this exciting opportunity for students of all ages to learn about Gregorian chant, the music par excellence of the Catholic Church, and the basis of all sacred music.  Each day includes Mass, lunch, and recreation time. The focus of this year’s Chant Camp will be chironomy, the conducting of chant.

A number of the Advanced Schola students are traveling to Spain later in the month to sing for a number of Masses in and around World Youth Day, in Toledo, Avila, and Madrid itself. Our rehearsals for that will continue every day from 10:00 to 12:00.   Chant Camp proper will begin, therefore, at 12:00 noon with the Angelus, followed by 12:10 Mass.  Chant instruction will follow in the afternoon.  The daily schedule is as follows:

10:00 Madrid rehearsal
12:00 Angelus
12:10 Mass
1:00 lunch
1:30 recess
2:00 chant
3:00 dismissal

The students will sing for the noon Mass at St. Mary’s on Friday, August 5th, and again for the 9:30 Solemn Latin Mass on Sunday, August 7th.

Both students with significant schola experience and those just beginning will benefit from Chant Camp. The only prerequisite is the ability to read English fluently. Attendance is required each day of the camp. Students should bring a bag lunch each day.

There is no charge for Chant Camp this year, but families are asked to consider a donation to the St. Cecilia Society at St. Mary’s in furtherance of its work of promoting sacred music at the parish.

For further information on Chant Camp, please e-mail David Hughes at music@stmarynorwalk.net.
