| On February 2nd, along with the Feast of the Purification and Presentation, Catholics celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Candelaria, also known as The Virgin Mary of Candelaria, which feast has its origin on an island belonging to Spain called Tenerife. The “candle” aspect refers to Christ the Light of the World as He is identified by Simeon when the parents of Jesus presented Him in the Temple 40 days after the Nativity according to the Jewish law.
The origin of the feast is in the East where it was called “the encounter” and made its way to the West in the 6th century, and finally to Rome, and to the rest of the world. In different places it is called by different names including The Presentation of the Lord, The Feast of the Candles, Candlemas, or The Feast of Lights. Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. (Luke 2:29-32) Simeon declared that Jesus would be a “light,” and the Church developed a custom of lighting and blessing candles on this day. Esta fiesta se conoce y se celebra con diferentes nombres en las distintas partes del mundo. La Presentación del Señor, La Fiesta de Las Candelas o La Fiesta de La Luz; significando que Cristo es la luz del mundo que vino a iluminarnos como una vela o candela, y quien fue presentado por su madre María al Templo en Jerusalén. Es de aquí que surge el nombre de La Candelaria.
Qué significa el Día de la Candelaria? De acuerdo a su significado nos dice que es una fiesta que celebran los cristianos en honor a la “Virgen de la Candelaria” o también conocida como “La Virgen María de La Candelaria”, que tiene origen en Tenerife una isla perteneciente a España. Candelaria que se deriva del candelero o candela que hace referencia a la luz santa que guía al buen camino, la salvación e intensifica la fe en Dios. También este día es cuando finaliza el periodo navideño, una vez que han pasado 40 días después de haber festejado la navidad, o sea el nacimiento del Niño Dios. Ahora que sabemos el significado y el origen,¿Sabes cómo llegó esta tradición a nuestro País? Seguramente muy pocos lo saben y para los que no, enseguida lo explicaré. La fiesta de la Candelaria se origina en el Oriente, y unos años más tarde esta tradición se fue extendiendo hacia el Occidente durante el siglo VI y después hasta Roma y así hasta llegar a cada parte del mundo que fue adoptando esta costumbre. Dicha fiesta se celebra cada 2 de febrero de acuerdo al calendario católico y de un pasaje de la biblia donde se hace mención de la Presentación del Nino Jesús en el Templo y la Purificación de María según el cumplimiento de las predicciones del Antiguo Testamento.
