All Saints Day/Día de Todos los Santos

On November 1st each year the Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, also known as All Saints Day, and a holy day of obligation. On this day, for several reasons, we turn our attention to the souls of all those who are in heaven. In order to better understand the significance of this feast we need first a definition of the term “saint”. St. Paul uses the word to describe all those who are followers of Christ. The Church uses the word in two senses: first, to refer to the souls of all those who are in heaven. These would include all those whom the Church has officially canonized, or declared to be in heaven, and all those who are there, but are known to be there certainly only by God and, we presume, the other saints and the angels.
The first reason that the Church celebrates this feast is to recognize God’s work in the saints and through them, for the saints are in heaven because of God’s grace. We may say that the saints give glory to God because they are His handiwork. When we honor them on All Saints Day or on their own individual feast days we give glory to God and especially to the Lord Jesus Christ, God and man, who is the model that all the saints imitate, and whose death and resurrection made sanctity (holiness) possible.
Second, we ask for their intercession for us before God since they are closer to Him than we are. Just as people ask for prayers from friends and family in times of need, so we ask for prayers from our heavenly family the saints.
Third, we look to the saints as examples to imitate. When the Church officially canonizes a saint She (the Church) sets that person up for us as an example of how one should live one’s life in this world so as to spend eternal life in heaven.
It is important for us to remember that God calls all men and women to be saints, and that He desires that all men and women will follow that call to become saints. God also has arranged things such that our particular state of life, i.e. whether we are single, married, consecrated, or ordained, and our own particular difficulties and challenges are never obstacles to our growth in holiness. Rather, every difficulty and challenge we face can be an opportunity to grow in grace and holiness, and every state of life can be used as a pathway to sainthood. The choice always remains ours, and is not made once and for all, but step by step over the course of our whole lives.
All you saints of God pray for us!
